What you can expect

At 8th Day we like to take our time with new members to make sure you’re comfortable before attending classes.  Feel free to start with a tour of the gym and a chat with one of our coaches.  If it seems like this is a community you want to be a part of, you’re off to Elements Sessions to prepare for CrossFit or to Boot Camp classes.  Elements are one on one training sessions with an 8th Day coach where you’ll get familiar with the basics of CrossFit.  Once you've got the Elements Sessions under your belt it's time to be released into the “wild” and join CrossFit classes.  If Boot Camp is more your style, the Elements Sessions are not required.

What we expect

  • Leave your ego at the door... unless you want it crushed ;)
  • This is a genuine community.  Headphones, lack of eye contact, and lone wolves not allowed.
  • Be patient.  You’re now on an athlete’s timetable.  Progress is not measured by the week or even month.  This is a long term program.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Most importantly, don't quit.  Ever.

Free Fun Friday

Free Fun Friday is the first Friday of every month! If you're interested in CrossFit / Boot Camp or you have a friend who's already crazy enough to be a member, tag along on the first Friday of the month for your one time trial class!  Click here to complete our waiver before class.

Wear shoes that you are able to run and jump in, and clothing that’s comfortable. Drink plenty of water prior to coming to class and bring a bottle of water with you.

Elements

You don’t build the roof of a house first.  Elements are the foundation of 8th Day Gym.  We’ll get to your roof later in the CrossFit classes.  In order to get started in CrossFit, we require our three Elements Sessions be completed before people dive into regular classes.  In the Elements Sessions you'll be taught the movements, techniques and lingo we use in class.

FAQs

Do I have to do Elements Sessions?

If this is your first exposure to this type of training then yes, we require that you go through our Elements course. We’re not trying to make an extra buck. In fact, we pretty much break even. We need you to be proficient enough to continue your learning in a larger group setting.

How many days a week should I attend class?
Depends. If your fitness level is very low, we recommend 2 days a week. Many of our members who have started out this way will then slowly add a day every few weeks. More than half of our gym population trains 4 days a week or more. Programming is designed to make this possible without overtraining. Acclimation should be slow and intelligent. We don’t need you to prove anything other than your ability to use your head, listen to your body, and do what we say.
How do I work this into my existing training (biking, swimming, running, yoga, etc…)?
Though we believe what we do at 8th Day is all you need for complete and holistic fitness, we understand that you have other activities you enjoy training and participating in. Our main concern is that you not overtrain. Be sure to check with us so we can offer suggestions on appropriate volume and intensities.
What should I eat pre/post workout?
We’re less concerned about what you eat as we are about the fact that you simply eat something prior to working out. Now that doesn’t mean that you should go out and get some Doritos and a Snickers before your workout. We recommend something good and healthy. Whether you eat a small meal or a snack it doesn’t really matter. Just make sure you have something in your system and that it’s healthy. We can get into the nitty gritty details of a performance diet at another time.
What should I eat in general?
Without going into a whole class on diet and nutrition, here’s a quick guide on how to eat. If it can sit in your pantry for weeks or months without going bad, you probably shouldn’t eat it. Try to avoid processed foods whenever possible and eat natural whole foods. Buy and eat nuts, fresh vegetables, fruits, and meats. There are some good food/energy bars and shakes out there but we generally recommend eating real food whenever possible. The paragraph below is from the CrossFit main site: Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.
Do these pants make my ass look big?
Yes they do...but don’t worry, we like that! ;)
Do I need to get in shape before I start CrossFit?
Absolutely not! We take people where they are. Though we require that everyone go through our Elements, we have no required fitness level that needs to be achieved before beginning Elements. If there are movements in class that you’re uncomfortable with or unable to perform, no need to be concerned. We can scale just about any exercise to an individual's ability level. Don’t let your perceived fitness level become an excuse that stands in the way of achieving your goals.
Will running help get me prepared for classes?
Not likely. Aerobic fitness is only one component of the more than ten we focus on. Unfortunately training in the aerobic state doesn’t cross over into training the anaerobic systems. The opposite is true, however. Training the anaerobic systems WILL cross over and help train the aerobic system.
Will I be able to keep up with the class?

Sure. Everything in class can be scaled to your ability level so that you can keep up with everyone and stay safe while doing so. If you struggle...who cares? Sure, some of us came out of the womb doing Muscle Ups, but the rest of us understand that it’s a journey. You’ll find nothing but support from members of 8th Day. Our 1000 burpee penalty for making someone feel bad is exceptionally effective.

What if I can’t lift the prescribed weight?
Not a problem. In fact you certainly won’t be the only one who’s not able to do so. We’ll scale the weight to something that’s more manageable at your current fitness level. That’s not to say it’ll be easy. We still want you to work, but in a manageable and safe manner. The prescribed weight is what we’d like people to eventually achieve. There’s no timeframe in getting there. Everyone moves at their own pace. This is simply the goal that we like to see attained.
How long is a class and how is it structured?
Each class runs one hour long. Class begins with a warm up that could take anywhere from 10 - 20 min. We then move into skill or strength training followed by the workout of the day (met-con). The warm up is a very important part of the class for which adequate time is always set aside. Depending on what the workout is for the day we will, on occasion, skip the training portion of the class and go from the warm up directly into the workout.
What do these acronyms stand for?

AMRAP - As Many Rounds/Reps As Possible
WOD - Workout Of the Day
HSPU - Handstand Push Up
KTE - Knees To Elbows
T2B - Toes To Bar
OHS - Overhead Squat
PR - Personal Record
TGU - Turkish Get Up
1RM - One Rep Max
KB - Kettlebell
GPP - General Physical Preparedness (overall fitness level)
LSS - Leg Swing Series
RB2H - Roll Back to Hurdle
EMOM - Every Minute On The Minute
E & S - Eagles and Scorpions
RX - Prescribed
MetCon - Metabolic Conditioning (high intensity workout)

Why do so many workouts have names?
Workouts with names will generally be seen on a semi-regular basis. We call these ‘benchmark workouts’. These workouts allow people to regularly measure their progress against a time or weight from a previously completed benchmark. Plus names are fun. Way easier to remember "Slim Jim", than to talk about that workout with 30 reps of such and such exercises.
From Girls… Is this going to make me bigger?
No.
From Guys… Is this going to make me smaller?
No.
